Carbon steel spectacle blind flanges, also known as figure-8 blinds, are specialized flanges used to temporarily or permanently isolate sections of piping systems. They consist of two metal discs connected by a central hinge, resembling the shape of a pair of eyeglasses or a figure-8 when viewed from the side. Spectacle blinds are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, and power generation. Spectacle blind flanges are typically made of the same material as the piping system and have the same thickness as the pipe wall. Each disc of the spectacle blind has a raised face or ring-type joint (RTJ) facing to provide a sealing surface for gaskets. One disc is solid, while the other has a machined hole or opening in the center.

To install a spectacle blind, the solid disc is positioned against the flange face with the opening facing outward. The other disc is then positioned with the opening aligned with the pipe, creating an open flow path. When fully open, the spectacle blind allows fluid to flow freely through the pipeline. To isolate the section of the pipeline, the spectacle blind is rotated 180 degrees, positioning the solid disc in front of the opening and blocking the flow.
